Workshop on Foot Pressure Scan using Dynamic Pedograph

For many people with diabetes, foot ulcers or gangrene lead to the amputation of part — or even all — of a foot. Yet with early detection, much of this heartbreak can be prevented.

As a person walks, the Dynamic Pedograph scans the sole of the foot and pinpoints exactly where excessive pressure is building up. This makes it possible to identify the regions most at risk of ulcers or gangrene before damage is done. Experienced orthotists can then create specialized custom-made shoes or insoles that redistribute body weight across the rest of the foot — protecting the patient’s foot.

In 2010, the device was developed at low cost with a fully in-house design through research conducted by the Department of Biomedical Physics and Technology at the University of Dhaka. To bring this device, along with several other successful healthcare technologies developed by the department, to the public, the department’s researchers established a non-profit spin-off company called BIBEAT Limited.

Through BIBEAT, 13 computerized dynamic pedographs have so far been installed in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and these systems have been operating successfully for years.

Recently, a grant from the EDGE (Enhancing Digital Government and Economy) project under the Bangladesh Government’s ICT Division has enabled key upgrades to the device. The goal is to bring this service affordably to people across the country.

We’re hosting a workshop featuring a live demonstration of the device and a detailed look at the technology behind it —
